Picture as Teaching Aid :
In the matter of language learning pictures have been used for several centuries. Pictures relate new and unfamiliar items with ideas or concept symbolised by them. Words, phrases and sentences come to life when they are associated with pictures.
Pictures are widely used in teaching English. According to Ruskin, “A room without pictures is like a house without win dows”.
A chinese saying goes: “A picture is worth ten thousand words”
In teaching English, Pictures of schools, building, market, railway, fair, river etc. can be shown to the class for teaching-
I. Structures.
II. Vocabulary and
III. Composition etc.
Pictures can be of different types :
1. Picture – Postcards
2. Snap shots.
3. Photographs.
4. Wall pictures and
5. Cut outs from newspapers and periodica
Advantages of Pictures
1. Pictures help the teacher to avoid verbalism in his teaching by giving reality to what he is explaining.
2. Pictures develop observation and imaginating power of the students.
3. They are based on psychological principle of interest.
While using pictures for teaching a teacher should keep in mind that –
1. Pictures should be used for specific purposes.
2. They should be bright and beautiful.
3. They should not be over used.
4. Pictures should be used judiciously.
5. They should be integrated in the lesson.
6. They should be visible to all the students.
